In 2010, over 1000 students gathered for the 9th Annual Maine Learning Technology Initiative Student Conference at the University of Maine, Orono. As part of that day, students engaged in live video conferences with representatives from the World Food Programme (WFP) in Rome as well as representatives from the Good Shephard Food Bank in Auburn, Maine to learn about the challenges of hunger worldwide and in Maine.

Afterwards, the kids were challenged to help by playing at FreeRice.com. In just 45 minutes, students had answered over 240,000 questions correctly resulting in donations to the World Food Programme in excess of 2.4 million grains of rice.

The partnership continued with the first RiceBowl Challenge. Together with NFL star Drew Brees, the RiceBowl Challenge brought thousands of students and adults together playing FreeRice.com. The students played for the RiceBowl Student team and everyone else played for Drew’s RiceBowl team. Together, the teams have raised almost 20 million grains of rice for the World Food Programme.
